Bethune-Cookman University recently issued the following announcement.

Track and Field returns at Bethune-Cookman this weekend when the Wildcats travel to Columbia, South Carolina for the 2022 indoor season opener at the University of South Carolina.

Idle since spring 2020 due to COVID-19, B-CU track is also in its first season as a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Wildcats will have four indoor meets leading up to the SWAC Indoor Championship Feb. 17-19 in Birmingham, Ala. Before transferring to outdoor season in March. The SWAC outdoor championships are May 5-7, also in Birmingham.

“I don’t even know how to feel,” said B-CU Head Coach Donald Cooper. ” Handling logistics has kept me busy, so it probably won’t sink in until we get to the facility and are ready to compete.”

Cooper admitted there’s some “rust to be shake off.”

“Definitely. We have to manage everything,” Cooper said. “It’ll take it toll, but we’ll get through the logistics of getting through the first meet.”

Among the returners includes Carlin Berryhill. Also expected to do well is Southern transfer Christopher Brown.

“Carlin’s excited for his last season indoors and his first season in the SWAC,” Cooper said.

Both men’s and women’s team are young, with a combined 24 freshmen on the two teams.

“I’m looking forward to see they handle the transition,” Cooper said. “The young sprint guys – Jermaine Dyges, Tavis Wilson are pretty good.”

The women’s team is paced by junior Thea Shaw, a former Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion. Promising newcomers are jumpers Alysa Whitro and Tatiana Elliott.

“Thea will be expected to lead the team, Cooper said. “We’re trying we’re to figure out how everyone fits.”
