Nearly 9 in 10 educators said the sessions enhanced content knowledge and presented effective teaching strategies
The Florida Department of Education released teacher survey results for the 2022 Summer Civics Professional Learning Series, which show overwhelming support for the program. Overall, 88% of participating educators said the summer learning sessions enhanced their civics content knowledge and 87% said the program’s presenters modeled effective teaching strategies.
“Governor Ron DeSantis is leading the charge for Florida to become the number one state in the nation for civics education, and we are well on our way,” said Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. “Despite the media’s false narrative surrounding Florida’s civics professional learning, our educators found it to be a beneficial and helpful resource for classroom instruction. I am pleased to hear such a positive response from attendees, and I look forward to gathering additional feedback as educators across the state prepare to teach the new revised civics and government standards.”
The 2022 Summer Civics Professional Learning Series offered ten, three-day professional development sessions for teachers, in preparation for Florida’s revised civics and government standards. All ten voluntary sessions, which occurred in June and July, reached full capacity with more than 2,100 educators attending in total.
Overall Average Results:
· 88% of attendees stated the sessions enhanced their civics content knowledge.
· 87% of attendees stated the presenters effectively modeled instructional strategies/pedagogy.
Fort Lauderdale Results:
· 88% of attendees stated the sessions enhanced their civics content knowledge.
· 83% of attendees stated the presenters effectively modeled instructional strategies/pedagogy.
Tampa Results:
· 87% of attendees stated the sessions enhanced their civics content knowledge.
· 90% of attendees stated the presenters effectively modeled instructional strategies/pedagogy.
Jacksonville Results:
· 90% of attendees stated the sessions enhanced their civics content knowledge.
· 88% of attendees stated the presenters effectively modeled instructional strategies/pedagogy.
Pensacola Results:
· 84% of attendees stated the sessions enhanced their civics content knowledge.
· 81% of attendees stated the presenters effectively modeled instructional strategies/pedagogy.
Ft. Myers Results:
· 91% of attendees stated the sessions enhanced their civics content knowledge.
· 88% of attendees stated the presenters effectively modeled instructional strategies/pedagogy.
Melbourne Results:

Ft. Pierce Results:

The Summer Civics Professional Learning Series is part of Governor Ron DeSantis’ groundbreaking Civics Literacy Excellence Initiative, which was created to elevate civic literacy and education for Florida’s students and teachers. Under Governor DeSantis’ leadership, Florida conducted an extensive review of civics and government standards in collaboration with Florida teachers and organizations such as the Jack Miller Center, the Florida Joint Center for Citizenship, and Hillsdale College. The newly revised standards will be fully implemented in the 2023-2024 school year.
