Students who are curious how artificial intelligence can be applied in their fields can enroll in a course this fall on how AI is used to solve real-world problems.
Frontiers in AI, or BSC2930, is popular among students who want to get their feet wet in AI and explore whether to pursue it further. The course will include guest speakers from a variety of academic disciplines – including medicine, law, business, biology, construction, philosophy, arts and journalism. NVIDIA, a Silicon Valley-based technology company and one of UF’s most prominent partners, as well as Cogability, an AI company that provides the Alli chatbot on many UF webpages, will also host guest speakers.
“The goal of the course is not so much to teach the details of how to do AI, but to expose students to the breadth of disciplines where AI is applied and highlight faculty from across campus,” said Matt Gitzendanner, the professor teaching the course.
The one-credit, online course includes lessons on AI fairness and equity as well as AI ethics, and is geared to help students understand how AI might be applied in their future professions.
Undergraduate students are eligible for the course with no prerequisites and can take the course synchronously or asynchronously. High school students can also take the course to earn dual enrollment credit.
“Artificial intelligence is an increasing part of our daily lives,” said David Reed, associate provost for strategic initiatives. “Here at the University of Florida, we are making efforts with courses like this to ensure every student understands how AI will impact their future careers.”
