Solo Homers Take Down Wildcats in DeLand

Bethune-Cookman University recently issued the following announcement.

A solo homer was the difference in a low-scoring affair as Stetson took down the Wildcats, 2-1, Wednesday night in DeLand, Fla.

How It Happened

Both teams started quietly at the plate until the third inning, when Stetson (16-22, 5-4 ASUN) took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run.

The Hatters tacked on to their lead with another solo shot an inning later.

The Wildcats (11-22, 6-6 SWAC) saw a huge opportunity in the fifth. Kayla Traylor and Julissa Gomez opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and Essence Gibbs reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases with nobody out.

Haley Parks brought Traylor home with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 2-1, but that was all for B-CU in the inning.

The Wildcats put one last runner on in the seventh, but could not bring the tying run home.

Halyne Gonzalez took the loss. She threw four innings, allowing two runs on only two hits – the solo homers – with no walks and four strikeouts.

Alyssa Lopez handled the final two innings, allowing only a hit and one walk with a strikeout.
