CITY OF LIVE OAK: Former Presidential Candidate Among 150,000+ Coronavirus Deaths

Zz

City of Live Oak issued the following announcement on July 27.

ACROSS AMERICA — Herman Cain, who ran for president as a Republican in the 2012 presidential election cycle, is among the latest people to have died from the coronavirus. Cain, who was hospitalized with the virus this month, is one of the most well-known figures to have died from COVID-19.

Word of Cain's death came Thursday morning, less than 24 hours after the United States reached the grim milestone of having reported more than 150,000 coronavirus deaths. New York remains the state with the most reported deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The university's data shows the U.S. leads the world in coronavirus deaths and surpasses the second-most affected country, Brazil, by more than 61,000 deaths. Florida again on Wednesday shattered its daily record with an additional 216 coronavirus deaths reported.

As numbers continue to rise, a federal report issued earlier this week has listed 21 states as being in the coronavirus "red zone," with three more listed than in a similar report just two weeks ago. Eighteen states have set daily new case records within the past two weeks as well, the New York Times reports.

Florida remains the state with the most cases per 100,000 people. The Sunshine State is followed by Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Nevada in that category.

As the case numbers continue to rise, disputes continue over whether people should be required to wear face coverings in public. In Georgia, the controversy between the governor and mayor of Atlanta has reached the courtroom, with Gov. Brian Kemp suing Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms to stop the city from requiring people to wear face masks.

Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert, who has repeatedly declined to wear a face mask in the Capitol, announced he tested positive for the coronavirus before a visit to the White House on Wednesday. Gohmert said he will isolate for 10 days to help prevent the virus's spread.

The New York Times reports both parties at the Capitol on Wednesday spent the morning identifying whom Gohmert came into contact with while awaiting guidance from an attending physician.

Earlier this week, Gohmert attended a Natural Resources Committee hearing and a Judiciary Committee session with Attorney General William P. Barr.
