Daytona State College issued the following announcement on Sept. 28.

Falcon Trio Sweep NJCAA Region 8 Player of the Week Honors after a solid week of wins ending the first round of conference play. Freshman, Alina Carrillo, along with Sophomores, Victoria Zarazel and Sarah Stratton, were honored as the players of the week in their respective positions.

Carrillo, a Freshmen Outside Hitter from Oviedo, Florida, was a dominating force for the Falcons last week which earned her the esteemed honor of Offensive Player of the Week. The 6-rotation outside had two solid performances against Suncoast Conference opponents State College of Florida and Indian River State College. During the 3-set match against State College of Florida, Carrillo hit an impressive .350.  She went on to log an even more impressive night against a very talented Indian River where she booked 17 kills, with only 1 error, on 27 attempts, hitting an outstanding .593% as the go-to outside hitter for the Falcons.  Additionally, Carrillo added to her stats 15 digs and 2 aces.

Zarazel, sophomore setter for the Falcons from Orlando, Florida, earned Setter of the Week honors for the second week in a row after her exceptional performance during last week’s conference play.  Zarazel noted a total of 65 assist over two short rallied 3-set matches and led the Falcon’s offense to victory.  Additionally, she added 8 digs, 5 kills, and 3 aces to her stats.

Stratton, the sophomore Middle Blocker from Tauranga, New Zealand, dominated the net for the Falcon team last week. Stratton recorded 10 blocks in total (7 block assists and 3 solo blocks) in two 3 set matches against State College of Florida and Indian River State College.  Additionally, she provided the team with offensive power noting 13 kills – hitting a .600% against State College and a .353% against Indian River.

“I am extremely proud of the entire Falcon team, but especially for the performance of the three young women who received this week’s honors from the FCSAA.  I thought Alina, Victoria, and Sarah all had an exceptional week of play and was thrilled to learn that they were selected as this week’s NJCAA Region 8 Players of the Week!” said Head Coach Laura Booker Anderson of the Falcon trio.

The team will begin their second round of Suncoast Conference play as they hit the road to face the Titans of Eastern Florida State College tonight at 6pm (Watch Live: https://www.efsctitans.com/webcast) and the Sharks of Miami Dade College (Watch Live: https://www.mdcathletics.com/landing/youtube-embed) on Saturday at 2pm.
