While a sinus infection is a common issue that can occur during any season, there are specific aspects of winter that can bring on symptoms, according to Dr. Cecil Yeung of Houston Sinus Surgery at the Yeung Institute.
Common symptoms of a sinus infection are a runny nose, nasal congestion, headaches, facial pain, drainage from the nose and in the throat, and a reduced sense of smell or taste.
With the temperatures dropping -- even in parts of Florida -- people tend to be inside more during the winter months than spring, summer and fall. So while winter itself doesn’t cause a cold, people are more susceptible to getting one, which can then often lead to a sinus infection.
Winter is also a time where people use fragrances and candles, and some find that these bring on allergies or sinus problems.
Winter tends to bring dry air, and even if you are inside, this could lead to a sinus infection, as the heat dries out the indoor air. Those who have pets could be more susceptible to sinus issues because of the buildup of fur and hair as pets also spend more time inside than usual.
For those who drink alcohol, Yeung recommends decreasing the intake during the winter months because it can cause nose swelling.
During the holiday season, whether you have an artificial Christmas tree or a real one, it can actually contribute to sinusitis. This is due to potential mold on a live tree or wreath. If you have an artificial tree or wreath and it was stored in a humid location like a musty basement or garage, it may also have gathered mold.
There are several ways to reduce the chances of having sinus issues during the winter months. One is to eat well and get enough sleep while also remembering to wash hands and avoid touching your mouth and nose. These steps will help avoid catching the common cold, which can lead to sinus infections.
Yeung also recommends cleaning carpets regularly or switching to hardwood or tile floors, if possible. All that time spent indoors can expose you to dust and other allergens that are harbored in carpets and furniture.
He added that allergen-proof covers for mattresses and pillows help, as well as regularly cleaning bed sheets. Yeung recommends that if you have pets, you should not let them sleep with you, as it increases dander and hair that can cause sinus and allergy symptoms.
