HOW IT HAPPENED
Matt Kavanaugh, making his first collegiate start, earned the opening day nod for the Sharks. The southpaw found himself in some early trouble, allowing a lead-off walk, which was followed by an RBI double. Kavanaugh relaxed a bit, following a visit from Head Coach Laz Gutierrez, and struck out each of the next two hitters. Catawba plated their second run of the inning with a single down the left field line, taking a 2-0 lead over the Sharks.
NSU wasted no time in responding to the early deficit, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Tyler Epstein was hit by a pitch and immediately put himself in scoring position with a steal of second base, which was followed by a Nik Sanders walk. Duncan Pastore lined a double to left-center field, tying the game 2-2 for the Sharks. Adan Fernandez became the fourth consecutive Nova Southeastern hitter to reach base, as he gave NSU a 3-2 lead with an RBI single to left field.
Kavanaugh worked around a one out error in the top of the second inning, providing NSU with a shutdown inning. The lefty followed the second inning with a 1-2-3 top of the third.
Daniel Irisarri led off the bottom of the frame with his first home run of the campaign, pushing the Sharks lead to 4-2. Shortly thereafter, Alex Hernandez added a solo home run of his own. Following a stolen base from Stephen Schissler, Epstein padded the Sharks advantage with a two-run home run down the left field line. Pastore capped off the outburst with a two-run home run of his own, giving him four RBIs in the first three innings.
Jarret Krzyzanowski entered for Nova Southeastern in the top of the fifth inning, relieved Kavanaugh in the top of the fifth inning. NSU added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Fernandez drove in Pastore, giving the Sharks a 10-2 lead. Pastore pushed the Nova Southeastern advantage to 12-2 in the bottom of the sixth, reaching on an infield single.
After entering the game off the bench, Jarrett Hall lined a double off the left-center field fence, driving in Gregory Delgado to put NSU ahead 13-2.
The Sharks closed out a 13-3 opening day victory over the Indians of Catawba.
