Bethune-Cookman University recently issued the following announcement.
Marcus Garrett led the Wildcats with 24 points, including 8 in overtime, on the way to a critical 71-63 win over Alcorn State, Saturday night in Lorman, Miss.
How It Happened
The Wildcats (7-17, 5-7 SWAC) started quickly in the game to the tune of a 11-2 run capped off by back-to-back buckets from Kevin Davis. Alcorn State (9-15, 8-4 SWAC) answered with seven straight points, eventually taking the lead at 25-24 with five minutes remaining in the first half.
The Wildcats went into the break down 35-27 despite shooting almost 50 percent from the field.
B-CU re-took the lead with 12 minutes remaining in regulation on a three from Mikey West, and raced out to a double-digit lead with eight minutes left. The Braves did not go away, however. With just over two minutes left, the Wildcats lead shrunk to one.
A jumper from Jakolby Long pushed the Wildcats to a three-point lead at 59-56 with two minutes remaining. Some tough defensive sequences on both sides kept things quiet for the final minutes, until a three-pointer from Henry Lenell tied things up at 59 each, sending the game into OT.
In the extra minutes, it was all Wildcats. B-CU dominated the final five minutes, outscoring the Braves, 12-4 behind eight points from Garrett. Alcorn State could not answer, and the Wildcats took the 71-63 victory.
"Complete team win," Wildcats head coach Reggie Theus said postgame. "Our bench was fantastic. We got back in the game and controlled the game on the defensive end."
"I always tell our guys, it's not about what you think is right, it's what we need to win the game," Theus said. "Our guys just locked in."
