Wildcats Look to Continue Winning Ways at Alabama A&M

The Wildcats look to continue their winning ways in Alabama this weekend as they take on the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M, Saturday, Oct. 1 at 3 p.m. EST

Bethune-Cookman leaves the state of Florida for the first time this season when the Wildcats travel to Huntsville to meet Alabama A&M. B-CU will be on the road the next five weeks – including a "home" contest is being played in Jacksonville October 15 before hosting Alabama State for homecoming November 5.

 Bethune-Cookman is coming off a 36-19 victory over Grambling State last week in its SWAC opener while Alabama A&M lost at Florida A&M 38-25.

B-CU is looking for its second straight win. The Wildcats snapped an eight-game losing streak last year with wins over Alcorn State and Grambling State. The last time B-CU started 2-0 in conference was in 2019 when it won its first four Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference games.

Alabama A&M won last year's game 30-27. The Bulldogs have won the last three meetings in the series, with Bethune-Cookman's last win coming way back in 1976 with a 34-21 decision.

LAST WEEK

The start was fast and the finish stronger as Bethune-Cookman downed Grambling 36-19. Darnell Deas scored two touchdowns – the first on an early kickoff return and the second a 37-yard pick six with 23 seconds remaining g that sealed a second half that saw the Wildcats pitch a second-half shutout and score the game's final 19 points. Que'Shaun Byrd rushed for 162 yards while Jalon Jones completed 13 of 18 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns as the Wildcats (1-2 overall, 1-0 SWAC) defeated the Tigers (1-3,0-1) for the fourth consecutive time.

KEMARI, PART ONE

Senior tight end Kemari Averett has received numerous preseason awards, including being named the best tight end on the 2022 Black College Football Hall of Fame Player Of The Year Watch List. Averett was also named to the All-SWAC First Team at SWAC media day in July, as well as the Stats Perform Walter Payton Award Preseason Watch, the 2022 HERO Sports FCS Preseason All American Second Team Offense, and the BOXTOROW HBCU All-American Second Team.

KEMARI PART TWO

Averett caught five passes against Grambling – including his first touchdown of the season – to extend his B-CU pass catching streak to 14 games. He finished the 2021 season with 52 receptions, 888 yards, and 11 touchdowns. He averaged 17.1 yards per catch and just over 80 yards per game.

DOWN UNDER

Senior punter Ben Lennon played four seasons of Australian rules football in the Australian Football League from 2014-17. He was selected in the first round of the 2013 AFL draft with the No. 12 overall pick by the Richmond Tigers. He played in 21 career games with 10 goals. Lennon was second in the SWAC in punting last year with an average of 42.7 yards per kick.

STATS AND STUFF

Byrd's 162 yards against Grambling was his third 100-yard game of his career; He had his longest run of his career with an 81-yarder in the first quarter … Deas' pick six was his first career interception; the kickoff return TD was his third career … B-CU is 9-11 in the red zone this season. B-CU went the first two games of the season without an interception and registered two against Grambling.

All-Time Series

This will be the 18th meeting all-time between Bethune-Cookman and Alabama A&M. The Wildcats own an 11-5-1 edge in the series, losing their previous three. Last season, the Wildcats fell to the Bulldogs, 30-27 in Daytona Beach.
