Women's cross country team places 19th overall at national tournament

The Eastern Florida State College women's cross country team made history Saturday in Tallahassee, placing 19th in the NJCAA Division I National Championships at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.

The Titans were led by Rachel Starr who finished 72nd overall with a time of 21 minutes, eight seconds. Starr moved up the field throughout the race and finished her freshman season with a solid finish at the national championships.

Allison Downie finished 93rd overall with a time of 21:48.5. Julie Hannah and Nicole Dombal ran together for most of the race as Hannah finished 115th overall (22:34.8) and Dombal was 117th overall (22:38.5).

Jennifer Martin finished in under 25 minutes for the second time this season, finishing in 24:39.9 while Maggie Dickinson finished in 27:19.2.

"We met our goal of a top 20 finish but we know we could have run better," Eastern Florida State College women's cross country coach Doug Butler said. "It was a great learning year for us and I'm very proud to finish like we did."

Southern Idaho repeated as national champions, winning the team title with all five runners finishing in the top 21. New Mexico Junior College was second and Salt Lake Community College was third.

El Paso's Faith Nyathi won the national title for the second straight year, finishing in 17:47.8.
